Some clarification on retainers yesterday at my checkup. Yes, the Invisalign retainers are a thicker gauge plastic - to be worn about 12 hours overnight when my teeth are in their final positions. Couldn't give me a definite lifespan on them since a few factors play a role in that: like if you're a "grinder", they will obviously wear out faster.
Attachments will be removed before retainers are begun & I'll be able to use the whitening kit then. New impressions will be taken to make the retainer. One gal in the office who successfully finished her Invisalign, had a permanent wire retainer bonded onto her lower teeth. After some time, at her regular checkup/cleaning, it was obvious her teeth had in fact shifted! At least with the Invisalign type retainer you can definitely tell by the way it's fitting if your teeth are moving at all.
No other patients have had any complaints regarding rough edges on their trays in this office. Cannot figure out why this is such a seemingly common occurrence with others.

Don't worry about an IPR, take my experience since I've had several of them and finished my last one this past week. Its only scary if you keep your eyes open thru the quick procedure - the tools look scarier than it really is! I felt no pain or sensitivity, just needed a quick rinse afterward to get rid of any lingering "toothpoweder" residue. In most of my IPRs I couldn't even see the difference in the mirror unless it was between the two front teeth. My IPRs were between 0.1 and 0.3 mm gap, mostly detectable only when you floss. All my gaps from the IPRs have nearly closed now from the teeth movements so it all appears to have worked.
Good luck with your IPR. Sounds like some patients like me had to have quite a few IPRs but few attachments (I only have one of those) - I guess its a tradeoff!
Hi Anne!
I agree with BadBoy regarding the IPRs being nothing to worry about. I have had a few done, and I've never experienced any pain or sensitivity. Hope it goes well for you.
Your smile is looking great!!
Oh, I'll be sure to post a detailed report after the deed is done. It's not going to happen until mid October.
It's just that this IPR is going to be between my central incisors - both upper & lower. That's why I'm a bit nervous - it's only THE most obvious spot in all of your teeth! It's mostly to minimize those little lingering "black triangle" areas left behind after treatment & to allow my teeth to fit more closely together.
Thanks for the reassurance guys -
I will definitely close my eyes!
Anne
Hi Anne,
Long time no post again, sorry! Your progress looks fantastic. Things are still going along great for me as well. Also, I had 3 IPRs early on in my treatment and was surprised at how fast, easy, and painless it was. Nothing to it.
Hey I finally got a chance to go to Canada last week. I went up to Grande Prairie in Alberta to teach a class at the regional college there. Went through Edmonton on the way there and Calgary on the way home. It was beautiful country and everyone I met was very friendly.
Eric
Hey there, Eric! Thanks - my progress IS going along just swell. Glad yours' still is, too.
I was born in Alberta actually. My only brother is in Edmonton - a long, long way from Southern Ontario. Glad you finally crossed that border - we do it quite often. I'm taking a week long course just outside of Pittsburg in October, so I'll be over then.
I'm trying to remember how many tray sets are in your plan...it was about the same as mine (23), wasn't it? Can't believe it's 2/3 of the way through already.
Time flies when you're havin' fun, huh?
Anne
(check in when you can - as always it's good to hear from you - no apology necessary)
Yeah, I have 24 uppers and 35 lowers. My teeth are tracking along perfectly still. I keep them in for 20+ hours per day and change them out every 2 weeks. I think the key to making these work is going to a good ortho to have your plan set up and being diligent in wearing them.
Also, I've not once had the issue of sharp edges on my aligners. That was one of my biggest concerns when starting the treatment was how much I read about people having to file down edges and getting sore spots in their mouths if they didn't. Mine have been fine since day 1.
Is there a way for me to email you through the blog? I feel like I know you (I know, that's stupid!)and I'd like to send you a pic or two of myself and my girlfriend. I haven't taken before and after shots of my teeth like you have, or I'd share those with you too. But I've noticed a huge improvement, and I'm definitely smiling more freely these days. Take care!
Eric
Hi Anne,
Sent you a message and a few pics, thanks!
Eric
